Understanding Space

Short course (Online) by TSTI · POA

This course delivers the “big picture” of space missions from concept through operations. This 2 to 3 day course begins with background on using space. Why do we go to space? What types of missions are conducted? How are space missions organized, managed and operated? Attention then turns to basic orbital mechanics to understand opportunities and limitations imposed on missions by fundamental laws of physics. Geostationary, Sun-synchronous and other orbits, as well as interplanetary trajectories, maneuvering, re-entry and launch windows are also discussed. The final section of the course examines space systems including remote sensing and other payloads, human spaceflight challenges as well as an examination of key spacecraft subsystems including rockets and launch vehicles. Course exercises are used to reinforce key topics. Understanding Space is the ideal course for technical or non-technical professionals new to the space industry, those “cross-training” from other disciplines or anyone who needs a refresher on space fundamentals. This course is designed for engineers, scientists, or managers either new to the space field or who want to broaden their understanding of the big picture of space systems and operations.

Mission Design Workshop

Workshop (Online) by TSTI · POA

This completely hands-on on-site or virtual workshop provides a unique opportunity to design a real-world space mission from scratch. Course participants are given a set of mission objectives in the form of a Request for Proposal (RFP) or Announcement of Opportunity (AO) and divided into competing groups to conceptually design a viable mission that meets the customer expectations at an acceptable lifecycle cost. The groups are guided through a structured space system engineering approach to define a mission concept and supporting space mission architecture, and complete a detailed analysis. Participants are given a comprehensive mission design and analysis tool along with a full copy of the Satellite Tool Kit software to analyze trade-offs and complete their design. A minimum of in-class lecture provides “just-in-time” learning and concrete examples to keep participants on track. The product of the design exercise is a 30 minute Mission Concept Review presentation where the participants are given the opportunity to outline and defend their design decisions. The Space Mission Design Exercise serves as a concrete and practical means to apply and test space system engineering techniques in a non-threatening, real-life environment. With over 3,000 alumni, this course is designed for systems engineers, payload principle investigators, subsystem engineers or project managers who are responsible for the detailed design and operations of space systems. Intact teams preparing to develop or respond to an existing RFP or AO. Past participants from Designing Space Missions & Systems, Human Spaceflight or Understanding Space are ideal!

Integrated CubeSAT Engineering Workshop

Short course (Online) by TSTI · POA

This 4 or 5 day tailorable course examines the application of Systems Engineering tools and techniques that will provide participants with the necessary skills, industry standards, information, and tools necessary to plan and implement a credible CubeSat Development Program. Emphasis is on practice over theory using a fully-functional (hardware and software) desktop (non-flight) CubeSat as the system of interest. Using the 3U EssentialSAT (ESat) desktop satellite, the course follows the progression of a hypothetical CubeSat mission – NanoMet-2 – designed to deliver large scale meteorological imagery from LEO. NanoMet-2 serves as an end-to- end systems engineering and project management training platform to examine issues that develop during each phase of a project lifecycle. The course is organized along the the lines of a real space mission, starting with Pre-Phase A concept development and then progressing from Phase A to D, introducing systems engineering artifacts that would be developed at each major milestone and providing hands-on examples using the NanoMet mission. NanoMet, based on the ESat platform, is designed to conform to the 3U CubeSat standard in terms of form and fit and includes all standard spacecraft bus functions (power, data handling, communication, and attitude determination and control). All hardware was designed to be for use around the world and is “ITARfree,” (it is not space qualified or even qualifiable). Participants are provided with key lectures and resources including design tools and model-based systems engineering (MBSE). Through a variety of in-class exercises and hands-on activities they will learn by doing. This course is designed for systems engineers, project managers, integrated product team members involved with any aspect of system engineering and analysis, especially design and development, test and evaluation CubeSats.

Applied Model-Based Systems Engineering

Short course (Online) by TSTI · POA

This 3-4 day tailorable course provides a broad introduction to the what, why and how of the processes, practices, tools and techniques that comprise the emerging discipline of model-based systems engineering (MBSE). The course makes extensive use of “learn by doing” through hands-on exercises. The focus is on six central themes that comprise the unique advantages MBSE offers—Capturing, Connecting, Controlling, Communicating, Collaborating and Cycling. The current state of modeling languages (UML, SYSML, LML, and others), ontologies, architectural frameworks and tools are examined. From this foundation, the course then focuses on examining each key part of systems engineering–Design, Manage, and Realize. Participants are guided through how to build a system model “from scratch” leveraging design patterns and other techniques. A “graduation exercise” asks participants to build their own model for a system of their choice. With over 3,000 alumni, this course is designed for practicing systems engineers, payload principle investigators, subsystem engineers or project managers involved with any phase of the space mission life cycle who are curious about application of MBSE to their projects.

Foundations of Digital Engineering

Short course (Online) by TSTI · POA

The early 21st century may be remembered as the start of the 4th Industrial Revolution—Digital Transformation. The Foundations of Digital Engineering course prepares knowledge workers on the front line of this transformation to navigate this transition. This 2 or 3 day course begins by examining the elements of the “Digital Trinity” — Agile, Open Architecture and Digital Engineering — and their interdependencies. From this understanding, Digital Engineering (DE) principles and practices are explored in greater detail starting with Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE). As the “model of the models,” MBSE serves a core function in the DE ecosystem. Ontologies, languages and frameworks are discussed to understand their broader application. Model development, validation and curation is then described. Finally, the importance and challenge of defining and managing an Authoritative Source of Truth (ASOT) is explored. The application of these tools within the enterprise then becomes the focus. Examples of current ecosystems and the promise of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) to enhance the power of DE are presented. All of these capabilities require a robust digital working environment leading to an examination of the IT and DevSecOps challenges that entails. The course concludes by examining the INCOSE digital transformation metrics as participants apply these to understand the current state and next steps for their organization. This course is designed for project managers, systems engineers, payload principle investigators, subsystem engineers or project managers who are participating in or responsible for digital transformation in their organization.
